Abstract The impact force at the end of a cylindrical rod can be estimated by measuring the strains at two suitable points on it. The theoretical value is in well accordance with the testing resultand the feasibility is verified. The dynamic penetration characteristic of rock is determined in each test by using the technique from two-point strain measurement. The accurate dynamic penetration coefficient and viscous damping coefficientof rock are evaluated by regressive analysis,and the typical model of the force-penetration relation of Taishan granite with viscous-elasticity is determined.
